2017 Reports

08/26/2017: The mid to late salmon season is well underway in Oswego! After the first of August the off shore salmon kicked in and many have said the " best in fifteen years " plan on burning some fuel and running out to 400-600 fow and start looking for bait down 100-130 ft on riggers copper rigs and dipsy divers. The best action has come on cutbait and stingray size spoons white and glows early and UV as the sunlite penatrates the water column. Several mature Kings over thirty pounds have been caught in Oswego and charter boat captains and their guests have been smiling. Some good dates are still available to enjoy the fun. Call or text Captain Mike at 315-727-5554 asap.

06/27/2017: The off shore fishery for Salmon kicked into high gear this past week and into the weekend. The charter boat fleet in Oswego has stored their lighter rods and downrigger weights and switched over to the heavier rigs. The early bite is best. The golden hour is at first light in 48-52 degree water, at depths of 150-250 feet and then 80 -120 feet as light gets brighter in the sky. Riggers, divers and copper rigs pulling echips, Spin Doctors and Stinger spoons have been boxing some nice King Salmon. Lake Tout are available on Christmas tree rigs and wobble glows pulled on the bottom in 120-150 feet of water. Brown Trout are available in 60-80 feet of water, out of 60-64 degree water where it meets the bottom. Cover water and stay away from boats. Enjoy the variety and strong fishing that we are fortunate to have so close to Central New York!

06/11/2017: June transition time is in full swing on Lake Ontario in Oswego! A mixed bag of Brown Trout are being taken at first light. After an hour fish the top forty feet for Rainbow and Lake Trout. Some salmon are being taken down to 100 ft. on riggers. Applications are all over the place with lead core rigs, with black and red spoons and flashers and fly's taking the salmon. It's typical Oswego, mid June fishing until the thermocline sets up. When it does, target areas will be defined. Cover water and look for baitfish.

05/14/2017: The high water in the Oswego river and Lake Ontario has been an inconvenience but not to the fish. The Brown Trout fishing has been the best in years with limit catches of Browns being caught east and west of the Port of Oswego. A variety of applications are working with side planers. With body baits run back 120-140 feet. The smaller size bait is in play now. Riggers down 5ft with spoons and try to stay in 10-15 feet of water off creeks and points. Lake Trout are being taken in 135-150 feet of water with wobble glows.  I have good fishing dates available.

04/29/17: The shakedown trip aboard the Proteus was successful this morning with some great friends aboard . We started an hour late and ran down to Burt Point. We immediately started taking Brown trout in fifthteen feet and 46 degree water. A downrigger program with stingers stuck four Browns down seven feet. We found out what we wanted and after less than three hours, we were back to port. The charter fleet got their Browns early and went out to 120 ft of water and worked the bottom for Lake trout. Looks like there are good numbers of cooperative Browns and Lakers close to the port.  I have several good fishing dates open. Call or text me at 315-727-5554 or go to www.proteussportfishing.com on the Rates/Book page and book your trip!
